History San José and the Speed City Era
Speed City : From Civil Rights to Black Power , an exhibition organized by History
San José, is an in-depth examination of American sport
in an era that spans the aftermath of World War II through America’s tumultuous involvement in Vietnam. The exhibition focuses on San José State College’s athletic program, from which many coaches and student athletes became globally recognized figures as the Civil Rights and Black Power movements reshaped American society. San José State College – now known as San José State University – was
selected as the focus of the exhibit as several Spartans became
principal figures during this period of dramatic social transformation.
The exhibition – which consists of historic photographs, multi-media presentations, and three-dimensional objects – discusses
the efforts and accomplishments of World War II veterans Lincoln Kimura (athletic trainer), Julius Menendez (boxing, soccer), DeWitt Portal (boxing), Yoshihiro Uchida (judo), and Lloyd “Bud” Winter (track and field) and his assistant, Bert Bonanno, as their efforts helped shape the young men who would soon become figures on the world stage of social change.
A catalogue accompanies the exhibition.
